Simple, sweet flower cupcakes

For Mother's Day, I wanted to make something yummy, and cute. I didn't want to go over the top, so I made my yummy white cake cupcakes. With my new frosting recipe that is to die for. Then topped each cupcake with a simple, cute flower, and edible gold stars.

A cute yummy cupcake, with a big dollup of super yummy frosting, that's my kind of Mother's Day!

Muppets Cake

Hi Ho! Everyone. We've got a Muppet theme this week. I have to say, I feel like I slept, ate, and breathed muppets for a straight week.
I watched the new movie a couple times, as well as looking at lots of Muppet's pictures and scenes. This cake was for one of my clients, for her son Brayden, who is turning 3, and is apparently way into the Muppets. So hopefully for him I captured the Muppets ok.
I decided of course to top the cake with the most important Muppets, which means of course Kermit, and Miss Piggy.
I debated about making my Muppets out of modeling chocolate or fondant. I decided to go with fondant. Which means I had to spend all week ahead of time, making them in pieces. and putting them together as they dried a little. So this was basically my whole week last week. I wanted to add a few "Movie" themed pieces as well, to pay homage to their latest movie, which I think is the one that Brayden likes the most.
 Fozzie Bear.
Animal of course, I was nervous about him, but I like the way he turned out,
If you're unfamiliar with Muppets, the logo usually has a big green M, so I used that and changed it into his name.
Are you saying "Who the heck is that?" Well his name is Walter. He's in the newest Muppet movie. He is apparently a regular person, who always loved the Muppets, and is responsible for bringing them back together, and in the end, gets invited into the Muppet ranks, so to say.
She didn't list these two, on the list of Muppets that Brayden is into.
But can you really do a Muppet cake without Beaker, or Professor Honeydew?
Definitely not! I think Beaker is one of my favs for sure.

Of course, the Great Gonzo! In the movie, he tears his suit off, to reveal this amazing hot pink outfit. (A scene me and my 5 year old watched a few times. I hope I captured it.
Sam Eagle, who I feel is just one of those you have to put on.
And the Chef, of course. Brayden probably doesn't care about them as much. But to someone growing up watching the Muppets. You've got to get these old school characters in there as well.
Here's the side view of the cake, I spent so long on this cake, I just wanted to get plenty of pics of it.
And one last look, on my weeks work. It was fun to work on, and I'm happy with the way it turned out.

First Communion Cake

Well, this was my first, first communion cake. Admittedly I had to google what a first communion cake should look like while I was on the phone.

My client already had bought this little statue, which I thought was a perfect little topper. We were torn between deciding if we should do an all white cake, which I think is the norm for a first communion cake. But in the end we decided to add some pink, so it wouldn't look to much like a wedding cake.

I wasn't thinking, and told my client I would write "Casandra's first communion" on the cake, and then when I went to do it, I realized I was crazy, and could never fit it on the cake. So I put it on the cake board instead. I think she was ok with it.

It was fun to do something I never had done before, plus I always love doing things like this that are simple and girlie. I hope she had a wonderful first communion, and celebration to go with it. I'm glad I got to help her celebrate her very important special day.

Watermelon cake

Well, it's cookout season, (well almost, anyway.) We had our first cookout of the season, last week. And what better for a cookout then a big slice of watermelon, (cake that is.)
I airbrushed this cake, to give it the watermelony look. My airbrush had a few issues in spots, but I'm going to work on that.

Happy cookouts!

Daisy Bouquet Cake

Well it's springtime! So when I got a call to make a cake for someone, and was told I could do anything I wanted, my first thought was that I wanted to do something with springtime flowers. So, wa la! I made 90 flowers altogether, 60 big ones, and 30 tiny ones. I'm writing this down slightly for my own records, so I can know what I want to do if I make this cake ever again.
The stems ended up a bit wonky, but stems aren't exactly perfectly straight, hopefully that didn't bug anyone. I thought it turned out cute anyway. Fun and springy.
On another note, I have, in my opinion perfected my white cake recipe. And a friend of mine recently tasted what she thought was the best frosting ever. So with the help of her family, they decided to do whatever it took to replicate it. She made batches and batches, and finally came up with something so so yummy, and was nice enough to share it with me. So the moral to that story is that even though this cake looks cute, it tasted even better. (Well technically I didn't get to eat it, but I tasted the extra cake, and frosting separately, and they were the bomb,)
Happy Springtime!

Minnie Mouse Cake, and Cupcakes

This one was for my sweet girl who turned 5 last week. We originally were going to do a splash mountain cake. (She wanted something Disneyland themed.) But when she saw the ombre ruffle cake that I did a few weeks ago, she wanted that. (Of course anything pink, ruffled, and girlie, she is going to want more than a mountain.)
So I tried to figure out how we incorporate pink ruffles into a Disneyland themed cake. And it hit me, minnie mouse. One downside to the top cake is, that is, if you eat black fondant, it makes your mouth completely black for awhile, so I try to avoid black. But you can't really do that with minnie mouse. One thing that I was excited about, was I tried a few different things with my recipes, and It turned out so good.
She had two parties, and also had to take a treat to preschool, so instead of making three cakes, the kids got cupcakes. I wanted to do something just cute and simple. And I think they were.

Bird-watching Cake

Well I got a call on saturday night, about 7:30. My mom was telling me it was my grandpa's 86th birthday the next day. My thought immediately was how dare she wait so long to tell me?! How could I make a cake in time. (Now one, of course she wasn't expecting me to make a cake. and two, I could always try remembering my grandpa's birthday myself.)
So I literally threw a cake in the oven, then in the freezer to cool as quick as possible. Then the next cake, I did the same thing. Until they were cool enough to cover and decorate. So for how hurried this cake was, it still turned out cute.

So I had to call my mom back to have her remind me what some of my grandpa's hobbies were. As soon as she said it, I felt dumb for not thinking of it myself. My grandpa has always been into watching birds, and especially now that he's getting a bit older, it has been a hobby that he can still enjoy. So on the side I made a little bird watching man, complete with little binoculars.

This cake was a chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream filling, and the bottom cake was a strawberry cake with vanilla buttercream, all covered in, of course marshmallow fondant.

Not to shabby for just a few hours huh?
